Wilhelmenia Drayton Obituary

Wilhelmenia Drayton, 90, of Ridgeland, SC passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Coastal Carolina Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Funeral Home of Ridgeland. We welcome you to provide your thoughts and memories on our tribute wall.

Wilhelmenia Tommer Drayton,  was born on June 5th 1931 to Anna and William Toomer.  She was the second of fifteen children.  She grew up in the Wagon Branch Community of Jasper County and attended the local school there. She joined the St. Matthew Baptist Church in Tillman SC at an early age.  She was affectionately called Granny by her loved ones and friends.
She worked mostly as a domestic and homemaker and was married several times but chose to keep Drayton as her sur name.  From these unions she was blessed with seven children: Willie Mae Burrison, Harry Lee Drayton, Larry Sylvester Drayton, Esq., Nancy Diane Olidge, Patricia Drayton Riley, Anthony Jerome Carmichael and Yolanda Tynell Terry. She was predeceased by Harry Lee and Yolanda Tynell.
Over the course of her long life, she was blessed to have lived in Massachusetts, Florida, Tennessee and Georgia.  Regardless of where she lived her heart was always in Jasper County...her hometown.
Wilhelmenia was a resident of Ridgeland Nursing Center for the last three years. She was well liked by all the staff and was known for her quick and sometimes sharp comments.
On November 20th 2021 after a very short illness, she was called home to rest surrounded by her children and grandchildren at Coastal Carolina Hospital.
She is survived by two sisters: Thelma Lewis of Boston Massachusetts and Bertha Washington of Atlanta Georgia, four Brothers:  Isaiah (Ollie)Toomer and Ulysee Toomer of Ridgeland SC and George (Emma) Toomer and Samuel Toomer of Boston Massachusetts. One brother-in-law Everette Drayton of Ridgeland SC and a sister-in-law Sadie Drayton of Bronx NY.  She was grandmother to eight and great grandmother to Twenty-one and great great grandmother to six. She was especially fond of her granddaughters Felicia (Fred)Fripp and Sharon (Joey) Mabreyy. They shared and unusually close bond that most granddaughters and.  grandmothers would envy.
Granny will be missed because she was the matriarch of the Toomer and Drayton family ...I can hear her now saying “don’t grieve for me because now I’m free, I followed the path God planned for me.”
Rest in peace, Granny... We will always Love You !
