Jessie Powell Obituary

Jessie M. Powell, 84, of Beaufort, South Carolina, passed away Monday, March 29, 2021, at Life Care Center of Hilton Head. She was the wife of the late Rev. Charlie Powell Sr. Arrangements by Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort.

Mrs. Jessie Mae Powell

Mrs. Jessie Mae Powell passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday, March 29, 2021, at Life Care Center of Hilton Head, South Carolina. She was born in Beaufort, South Carolina on February 14, 1937, to the late Joseph Mims and Alice Wilson-Mims. She was raised by her late maternal grandparents John Wilson and Maria Mathes-Wilson after her mother died while giving birth to her only brother, the late Joseph Mims, Jr. (Uncle Joe).

As a proud young lady, she mentored her cousins Shirley Mims-Long and the late George Mims, Jr. and an of host other young relatives that grew up with her. Later, she found herself in the trust of the Lord and on her own after the passing of her beloved grandmother. In God’s perfect plan, she met a young man and fell in love with the late Reverend Charlie (Bud) Powell, Sr., and they soon married and to this union, six children were born.

Jessie Mae was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to all who were close enough to feel the embrace of her love, and not to mention the sweet smells of her good ‘bread pudding’ that so many remembered her for. She lived an outstanding life and was a source of strength, support, and encouragement to so many of the people who knew her. She modeled the “Proverbs 31 Woman” by being a blessing to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and neighbors, which honored God and gave Him the glory. Jessie Mae was a lifelong Christian, who was an honored member of the Horsepond Baptist Church in Beaufort, South Carolina. She was a co-founder and first lady of Good News Baptist Church for many years, where some say they can still see her sitting on the front row singing joyfully for the Lord.

Jessie Mae had a giving heart and a godly desire to be a blessing to all. She shared herself and her God with everyone she met. She fought for what she believed with all her might, which made her a special soldier in God’s Army against the evils of the world. If she could speak to us right now, Jessie Mae would probably say “No time to sit down now, come on y’all get up, we got work to do.” Yes Jessie, we are going to let you rest a little while, we still got work to do for the Lord.

She is survived by an only sister, Lula Bradley. She was preceded in death by her sister Rebecca Sanders, aunts and uncles, Frank, Freddie, Willa Mae, Rebecca, Charlie, and a host of cherished aunts and uncles.

She leaves to cherish loving memories, her children, Charlene (Donald) Lopes, Charlie Powell, Jr., Judy Powell Crawford, Kenneth (Joyce) Powell, Mary (Cedric) Edwards, and Lionel (Jennifer) Powell; grandchildren, Kimberly Powell Fields, Erica Crawford, Jessica Lopes, Cedric Edwards, Zebulon Powell, Kenneth Powell, Jr., Shanika Osborne, Sheena Powell; as well as a host of loving great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
