Alvin Settles, 69, of Beaufort, SC passed away Saturday, April 3, 2021, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Gloria Settles. Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort. We welcome you to provide thoughts and memories on our tribute wall.
A walkthrough viewing will be held Sunday, April 11, 2021, from 5 -7 PM at Allen Funeral Home in Beaufort (1508 Duke Street) and A Private Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 12, there will be no visitation, 2021, @ 11 O'Clock in the morning the burial will follow in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Alvin Settles, 69, was born May 15, 1951 in Aiken, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Robert “Bob” Settles, Sr. and Ollie Mae McKie Settles.
Alvin graduated from Schofield High School in Aiken, South Carolina and South Carolina State University (SCSU) in Orangeburg, South Carolina. At SCSU he was affiliated with the Army ROTC and proudly carried the banner for the band. He met many friends at SCSU but cherish an ongoing friendship with “The Boys” at SCSU and they are still friends today. Alvin was a long- time member of the local Alumni Association of SCSU and was an avid supporter of the Marching 101 of SCSU. He taught swimming on the Marine Corps Air Station for thirty-two years and the City of Beaufort (Green Street Gym) for thirty years. The City of Beaufort proclaimed June 23, 2015 as Alvin Settles Day for his service to the community and the school system. He started playing golf at an early age and it continued to his adult life. While playing golf at Parris Island he developed friendship with fellow golfers.
Alvin retired as a speech pathologist at the Department of Defense at Laurel Bay School System, Laurel Bay, SC, after forty years. He cherished his time at Laurel Bay where he established strong and lasting memories and relationships.
Alvin was member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a trustee, deacon, Sunday School teacher, and member of the senior, gospel and male chorus. He enjoyed singing and leading praise and worship. He was known to share his beliefs with anyone he met. He treasured his time spent and special friendships at Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother Robert Lee Settles.
Alvin leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Gloria of the home, daughters, Kristin D. Settles of Columbia, SC, and Yolanda Simmons-Middleton of St. Helena Island, SC, and son Jerrod Settles of Rock Hill, SC. He also leaves his sister Lillie S. Jumpp (Tony) of Aiken SC, brother Calvin (Deacon Betty) of North Augusta, SC; grandchildren, Kenneth, Justin, Nala, Alanya and Lamont; in laws, Lillie Roacher, Rev. Clarence and Irene Hilton, Dea. Thomas L. Harvin and Christine, Raymond and Deborah Harvin, Dea. Freddie and Brenda Richburg and Minister Barney and Jacqueline Dozier. He is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.
