Staff Sergeant Ben Ellis Dean Obituary

Staff Sergeant Ben Ellis Dean, the son of the late Ernice Smith Dean and the late Julian “Chizz” Chisolm, raised and loved as a son by the late Arthur B. Brown, was born October 6, 1964 in Charleston, South Carolina. 
He attended St. Helena Elementary and graduated from Beaufort High School, Class of 1983. He was baptized at an early age at Orange Grove Baptist Church. He proudly served ten years in the United States Army, until he was medically discharged.
Ben loved his time in the Military and was determined to help fellow veterans in any way he could. Ben moved to Spartanburg, SC where he attended New Testament Church and volunteered his time as an advocate to help homeless and disable veterans in the area. 
On Saturday, September 21, 2019, Staff Sergeant Ben Ellis Dean entered into eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald “Ron John” Smith and his sister, Stacia S. Smith.
Staff Sergeant Ben Ellis Dean leaves to cherish his unforgettable memories: four sisters, Ella M. Mouzon, Gloria (Rainey Jr.) Fripp of St. Helena Island, SC, Patricia (Ervin) Owens of Beaufort, SC and Monica Chisolm of Virginia Beach, VA; four brothers, Ernest (Katherine) Dean of St. Helena Island, SC, Walter K. Smith of Hilton Head Island, SC, Rodney Chisolm of Richmond, VA and Jason Chisolm of Virginia Beach, VA; aunt,  Rosie Mae Murrey; special friends, Richmond “Rex” Simmons, William “Chuckie” Jefferson, Isaiah “Trout” Daise, James “Jimmy” Smith and Jimmy Lindsey all of Spartanburg, SC; also a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and scores of adoring friends. 


Staff Sergeant Ben Ellis Dean, 54, a native of St. Helena Island, SC died Saturday, September 21, 2019 at his residence in Spartanburg, SC. Visitation was held from 5-7 pm Monday, September 30, 2019 at Orange Grove Baptist Church on St. Helena Island, SC. Funeral services will be held 11am Tuesday, October 1, 2019 also at Orange Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Beaufort National Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort, SC in charge.
