Clayton Herman Smalls, a man of God, passed away at the age of 66 on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 in Beaufort, SC. He was born May 17, 1953 on St. Helena Island, SC. At an early age, he joined Grace Bible Chapel on St. Helena Island, SC under the leadership of Reverend Benjamin Glover. Clayton was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Deloris Kirkland Smalls; father, Herman Smalls; sister, Corinne Mabel Smalls and brothers, Robert Smalls and Conrad Edward “Button” Smalls.
He was educated in the Beaufort public school system, graduating from Beaufort High in 1971. Clayton joined and served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Afterwards he followed his childhood dreams to become a long distance truck driver. He received his CDL and became a professional commercial truck driver for over 35 years until his health failed. Clayton returned to Beaufort, residing with his brother he completed his very quiet and peaceful life surrounding by family and friends until God called him home to take his rest.
Clayton is survived by his sister, Mollie Noelle Smalls Rhinehart (James) of Stone Mountain, GA; brother, Jeffery Lord Smalls of St. Helena Island, SC; one sister in law, Marlene Mills Smalls; two aunts, Beatrice Smalls Glover and Matilda (Jepter) Derrick; three uncles, Wesley (Louise) Smalls, Oscar Smalls and Franklin (Peggy) Smalls; nephews, Davel Smalls, Imari (Arianne) Raysor, Reggie (Nicole) Howard, Justin Smalls, Travis (Shawndrey) Rhinehart, Jordan Rhinehart; two special cousins, Queen Esther Pinckney and Mary Jane Chaplin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
